WinVI 1.12
WinVI is an editor, but not just an editor. WinVI can be used as the
popular unix VI editor, but also as a 'normal windows editor'.
A VI editor does not use a mouse. Instead, almost every key on your
keyboard is mapped to a command. You can also remap commands, which makes
VI a macro based editor that is very suitable for technical editing
purposes.
A window editor commonly lets you use the mouse to position the cursor
and select parts of text, allowing you to use the windows clipboard for
cut copy and paste actions. The windows mode of WinVI implements such an
editor. Switching between VI mode and windows mode is as easy as pressing
a hotkey, clicking on a toolbar button or selecting a menu.
Beside having the comfort of these two different approaches to editing, the
WinVI editor has the following features:
- Syntax filters, which let you define the keywords and the comment
syntax of a language, in order to put colors to functional elements
of the language you are editing. The syntax filters may include templates
for a specified file format as well as:
- Tools, which can be configured for files of a defined (programming)
language. Most common use for tools is to run an external program and
have the output of the program being loaded back into the editor, but
other tools - such as opening a windows help file at a specific keyword
- can be configured as well,
- Definitions of file types, to associate a file extension with a syntax
filter,
- Spell check, with configurable dictionaries. Since the dictionaries are
just ASCII files containing words, you can easily create or modify
dictionaries to work with WinVI. Double occurrences of words are being
checked, and WinVI optionally changes the case of the letters in a word
if a word has been typed with more than one capital at the beginning,
- Abbreviations, which will be expanded during typing,
- E-mail facilities (if Windows Messaging is installed at your machine),
a straight forward interface to send files and open received mail into
the editor,
- Access to URLs, loaded directly into the editor (if Internet is
installed at your machine),
- Copying, cutting and pasting of rectangular selections of text,
- File drag and drop support,
- An inline calculator, to evaluate numeric expressions without having to
use an external calculator,
- Sticky (smart) keyboard for entering special characters,
- Directly loading URLs into the editor,
- A calender that can insert formatted dates in your text,
- A recovery system for retrieving files that have gone lost due to a crash,
- Many more options that operate on your text, such as tab conversions,
removal of trailing blanks and empty trailing lines, quick copy and paste...
- On-line help.
WinVI version 1.11 is the first version to support projects.
The support for projects is not optimal yet, but we have decided to put the WinVI 1.12 release on the web already, since
even if the project functionality is not used, the 1.12 release contains many fixes
with respect to version 1.10. So for regular editing one is also advised to switch to version 1.12.
