REFPROP is a program that uses equations for the thermodynamic and transport properties to calculate the state points of the fluid or mixture. These equations are the most accurate equations available world wide. Their high accuracy is obtained through many coefficients in the equations, and thus the calculation speed will be slower than other equations such as Peng-Robinson cubic equations. The equations are generally valid over the entire vapor and liquid regions of the fluid, including supercritical states; the upper temperature limit is usually near the point of decomposition of the fluid, and the upper pressure (or density) limit is defined by the melting line of the substance.
The REFPROP program is authored, maintained and distributed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The REFPROP program is available for a small fee from the NIST website (http://www.nist.gov/srd/nist23.htm).
If you have REFPROP version 8.0 or higher installed at your computer, and you would like to use REFPROP thermodynamic in CAPE-OPEN version 1.1 compliant simulation environments, then the REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager is what you are looking for.
The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager allows creation of Property Packages using a simple graphical front end:
Here, you can create and maintain Property Packages. A Property Package is a collection of compounds
and calculation methods that you want to use in your simulation. The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package
Manager provides a simple user interface to configure Property Packages:
Any of the REFPROP Fluid files (*.fld) that are available on your system can be used in a REFPROP Property Package.
After creation of the Property Package, you can load and use your Property Package in a CAPE-OPEN
version 1.1 compliant simulation environment. This example shows how to load a REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package in
the COFE simulation environment:
After selecting the REFPROP Property Package Manager, a Property Package can be selected:
The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager does not include REFPROP itself; REFPROP
can be obtained from the NIST website.
The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager requires REFPROP version 8.0 or higher to be installed
at your system.
The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager is a COM object that will run in Windows environments.
To use the REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager, a CAPE-OPEN version 1.1 compliant simulation
package is required. For example COCO, Matlab Thermo
Import, OpenOffice Calc Thermo Import, Scilab
Thermo Import and others.
The REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager is available from the Downloads page
as a Windows installer package (REFPROP_CAPEOPEN.msi). This is a 7-day free trial. After the trial period,
if you want to continue to use the REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager, registration is required.
For registration, a license fee must be paid. Licensing is on a per-person basis (and can be
used on multiple computers). The license fee is € 150,- (if you do not have a VAT number, and if you are outside
the European union or inside Spain, VAT of 18% is applicable).
Before registering the REFPROP CAPE-OPEN Property Package Manager, please download and install the trial
version to ensure the software does what you expect.
